This year’s National Medical Excellence Award Ceremony, held on 17 August 2016, saw Prof Roy Chan, Medical Advisor and Senior Consultant at the National Skin Centre (NSC), lauded with the National Outstanding Clinician Award by the Ministry of Health (MOH).
Prof Chan, who was the Centre’s Director from 2004 to 2014, was commended for this instrumental contributions to Singapore’s dermatological care, as well as his leadership in fostering AIDS education and awareness in the country.
Under his directorship, the Centre introduced numerous new services in medical and surgical dermatology, and set up the Singapore Skin Research Institute of Singapore (SRIS) alongside A*STAR and Nanyang Technological University.
Besides his work in NSC, Prof Chan was also a pioneer of AIDS Education and Awareness in Singapore. In 1988, he founded Action for AIDS (AfA), a non-governmental organisation and charity dedicated to fighting AIDS/HIV infection. At AfA, Prof Chan spearheaded numerous innovative educational and prevention campaigns. He also introduced new testing paradigms and has been instrumental in bringing affordable and accessible medications to thousands of Singaporean patients.
"It is very important to fight the stigma against HIV and Aids because it interferes with control and prevention of the disease," said Prof Chan, "People are afraid to get tested for fear of discrimination. It hampers prevention and control methods."
